At our Presentation Night last Saturday, Josh Slater was awarded life membership to the acclamation of all those present.
Josh joined us fresh from Dowling some fourteen seasons ago with his mate Comrey Edgeworth. Josh was already playing first and second eleven subbies as a 15 year old for Kingston Saints. He started in the threes as a leg spinning batsman with us and worked his way through the grades in a steady fashion.
His on-field contributions have been honed from pure hard work and determination, 225 games for Dandenong overall with a high score of 187 and 68 1st XI games with a high score of 131. He was Victorian Premier Cricket 2nd XI player of the year in 2017-2018 tying with his opening partner Ryan Quirk. He has made a number of 100s across his 14 seasons in all grades and the great 7/77 in the 3XI against Essendon causing a collapse bowling his leggies. In 2015-16 a shoulder injury curtailed a promising leg spinning career and Josh finished off the season assisting us in the fours and adjusting to a new role.
In presenting Josh with his medal Gehan said “As for his demeanour on the field, he doesn’t say much but he is as competitive as they come having seen it as both an opponent and a teammate. He is also a very good thinker and leader around the team. As a team-mate, he is one of the best, always supportive whether it be constructive criticism, general chat or anything cricket or life related, havent heard anyone say a bad word about him.”
Josh has served on the committee for the past 3 years and is a ready contributor, he has assisted on the social committee and some of his best attributes are his care and consideration for others and a willingness to support those around him.
Nothing has come easy to Josh and he has spent seasons consolidating his move from one grade to the next, often being moved around in the order to best suit the team on the day. All the while he has been a great clubman and fine team mate.
Congratulations Josh, well deserved.
